Hi all,

First the big news - the quirky, talky, decidedly non-journalistic documentary I made with poet/artist Truong Tran and psychoanalyst/artist QiRe Ching will have its virtual world premiere soon - and then will have its European premiere in July! It would be so wonderful if you would share the trailer and ticket link page with your community.

The Bandaged Place: From AIDS to COVID to Racial Justice
WORLD PREMIERE at the Queens World Film Festival on Sunday, June 27th, 2021 at 4 pm EST. Purchase tickets here! (Virtual) $15 for the screening - but I also have a limited number of festival all-access pass codes which take $100 off the $125 price - making it worthwhile even if you just watch 2 films. First-come, first-served! (Hit "reply" smiley)

EUROPEAN PREMIERE at the Cannes Independent Film Festival from July 6-17, 2021 on Eventive! (Virtual 11 day streaming window, tickets not yet posted)

Trailer and description here (the film runs just under an hour)

The film came out of artistic and personal need to explore grief, rage, identity and meaning last year, through poetry and conversation with Truong and QiRe. There ain't no friends like pandemic friends, amirite? Sompong Viengvilai was our cinematographer and editor - and he did an amazing job. I'm very pleased with what resulted, as a document of our times, and mostly to have spent time with these amazing men and the rest of the crew, including Jenny Chu (second camera), Austin Blackwell (stills), Seretse Njemanze (sound), Chiedu Ofoegbune (grip and gaffer), Reymundo Peralta (secondary camera and sound), and Kym Gray (logo design).

I'm glad to share this with you, and I hope the film helps you find meaning as well. (More dates will be announced, stay tuned, and my aim is to put this in general release on Vimeo by October.)

“Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are experiencing unprecedented and growing health inequity issues brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and anti-AAPI hate. While racism targeting Asian Americans is not new in U.S. history with exclusionary immigration policies that systemically barred immigration from Asia until 1965, the antagonistic U.S.-China relations and inflammatory political rhetoric about the virus (e.g., “China virus”) exacerbated racism against Asian Americans."
