San Francisco, San Francisco
we fell in with each other
fell into bed with each other
you took me in
took me for a spin
San Francisco, San Francisco
i landed in you
you landed in me
we were there for each other
when America landed on us
learned to love again
learned to keep growing
after the fall
and fallafterfall
San Francisco, San Francisco
more people have come to you
many people have left you
you’re new again to me
like an old girlfriend
who just keeps changin’
wantin’ a bigger life
are we drifting apart?
i write these texts
to speak to you
i write these poems
to sing to you
ask myself what it is
i love about you
ask myself what it is
you want of you
ask myself what it is
i want of you
ask myself what it is
i haven’t seen of you
hardship and humility
keep my needs low
but i have more to give
do you need me?
do i just have a need to give to you?
should i just let that need go?
i’ve never been a taker
that much i know
in giving i receive
giving brings me back to my soul
but sometimes it hurts
to feel the short end of that game.
to feel unpartnered
in a house of overcautious names.
but that’s true for all givers to you.
i’m sure the earth feels shorted that way,
my mother too.
they never complain
but I hear them,
just the same.
just this 51-year-old kid
livin’ Kennedy’s call
asking himself
what more can he do
what will he be allowed to do
what is needed
when will he be called?
i guess I’ll have to do the calling
from this uncertain view
do the stylin’
in this quest to find you
find me
be me
be part of this
strange
and changing we
build knowledge, wisdom, skill
build compassion, goodwill
meet you again
fall in love, again
see you, really, for the first time
again
San Francisco, San Francisco
we live in each other’s palms
each of us
a little blind
leading each other
up and down
a steep, scenic wind
let’s help each other
up
let’s see each other
let’s see
