(The Birthday of His Holiness the Dalai Lama)
I’m a doctor on the boat of the wounded
wounded myself.
Every time I think I’m alone
I look around and see
the whole world is here,
with me,
sailing together
on the cosmic sea.
Fights break out.
Some argue over lifeboats and taxes.
Some scapegoat the captain and crew,
the other passengers too.
Is this the Titanic, the Unforgivable
or the Redeemable, the Redoubtable?
The Misunderstood, the Confused?
The Hopeful? The We’re-Here-Just-To-Amuse?
Are we on the Kobayashi Maru?
I’m not sure our ship’s name
But I will never give up on the people
she contains.
I tend to the woman next to me.
She cries in her sleep.
I remind myself there are many carers in place,
we know our hearts,
where we’ve found our grace.
May the carers join hands,
May the carers embrace.
