(Inspired by the poetry of William Roper in Genryu Arts’ Boxes)
gimme that old time religion
gimme that old time religion
gimme that old time religion
and box us in again
we need religion, like we need parents
but parents don’t live forever.
some say they’re reborn into our children.
some say they move on into some heaven.
we need identities, like souls need bodies
but bodies don’t live forever.
our identities are reborn every moment
they shift and change; they’re only a lever.
buddha, jesus, allah, yahweh
that’s all good – but what is your way?
who are you?
who am I?
I don’t know, he said with a grin
I don’t know either, I replied with a smile
Eagle, Seagull
Raven, Crane
Swan, Duckling
Rooster, Crow
we’re all of the above
from nothing we grow
when made with love
our we-dentity glows
